War of 1812 at Fort George

Monday was  the day the war of 1812 was decalred 200 years ago. The fort in Niagara-on-the-lake, Fort George was having special events Monday, (and I think all summer, too).

 Fort George was the British headquarters in the war of 1812. It was later taken by the Americans in 1813, so that they would be able to take more land from Upper Canada. After being in the possession of the Americans for seven months, the fort was taken back by the British in the December of 1813 and remained with them for the rest of the war. The fort was rebuilt after the war but then started falling apart in the 1820's. It was finally abandoned for a more strategic Fort Mississauga.
It was later used for farming, and even later a hospital for the Canadian Military.
In the 1930's, the Royal Engineers reconstructed the fort using the original plans which finally made it a National Historic Site.

We three oldest girls LOVE to dress up in period clothing. So on Monday we wore our Regency time period dresses that we sewed.
